New Ways to Putt Here's What the Pros Have Said

“I’d be a good putter today if they’d let me be an arm putter the way I want to be, using my old croquet style…. When I first tried it, I said to myself, ‘This is it. I can use my arms to putt, and I can see the line!'"
Sam Snead, from The Game I Love

“I don’t believe you should put a man down to hitting the ball one way.”
Gary Player, speaking in 1967 about croquet-style putting.

“This is ridiculous. Why don’t they just let us tee up the ball and play it?”
Jack Nicklaus, speaking in 1967 about croquet-style putting

“There has been some interesting post-Masters chatter about Adam Scott and how he came so close to being the first male to win one of the four major championships using a long putter….This is not the first time the Masters has brought attention to how someone putts and stirred debate about what is proper. Putting Controversies Old and NewBy Jeff Skinner Linkslifegolf.com

“It is only fitting that putters and putting has been the source of so much debate lately. After all, no other club is used as often during a round of golf as the putter and the flat stick, long or short has been the cause of controversy for hundreds of years.

“Sam Snead, a three time Masters Champion, took his new unorthodox putting style to the 1967 Masters….At the Masters Bobby Jones told Snead he didn’t approve of his new putting style. Sam being Sam just putted the way he could to make more putts. The controversy could have died there but Jones wouldn’t let it.”

“At the time Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player spoke out against the banning of the croquet technique. Player: “I don’t believe you should put a man down to hitting the ball one way.” Nicklaus “This is ridiculous. Why don’t they just let us tee up the ball and play it?” But their cries, as well as Snead’s went unheard.”
